The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad is a great day trip destination for all Western Washington residents. The 2+ hour round trip from Mineral to a tall trestle on the route to Morton includes a 2.3% grade which provides spectacular stack-talk from the hard-working steam locomotive as it climbs the grade, bringing back memories to senior passengers who will recall such sounds from their youth and vividly displaying history to the younger generation who know only internal combustion as a means of vehicle propulsion.
On the way to the departure point at Mineral be sure to stop by the depot at Elbe where you’ll find souvenirs for the kids and kids-at-heart along with good historical reference books and videos for those interested in the history of logging with railroads in Western Washington. It is expected that the flood-damaged bridge over the Nisqually River will be repaired by about October and the trains will then once again be able to depart from the Elbe depot instead of the railroad shop at Mineral.
